Even if you’re new to astrology, chances are you’ve heard about Mercury Retrograde—and likely there were words like “chaos”, “disruption”, “glitches”, “misunderstandings”, etc attached to it. Which can be true, but there’s another side to the story.
If I’m being completely honest, I fucking love Mercury Retrograde periods. I actually look forward to them because ever since I’ve been tracking astrological cycles I’ve learned how to partner Mercury retrogrades in a way that brings really wonderful gifts every single time. Do I still experience some glitches? Sure—meetings fall off the calendar unexpectedly, important documents get lost in email, I send a client the wrong file—but I’ve learned that even glitches are just strategic redirections from the universe. Allow me to explain.
Rethinking Mercury Retrograde
Every entrepreneurs has experienced those frustrating moments where messages are lost or misinterpreted, technology glitches where your saved draft seems to have just disppeared into the either, or deadlines that you swore were a few days away until suddenly you realized you’re actually already late. While these kinds of hiccups can happen virtually any time, they often coincide with the infamous Mercury Retrograde—a term that strikes fear into the hearts of those who’ve heard of its reputation for chaos, regardless of whether you actually study astrology.
In my experience, I’ve developed a much different perspective that I began to share with my team and leaders before I even left corporate. Mercury Retrograde isn’t actually the villain it’s made out to be. It’s actually a really powerful opportunity to recalibrate your business in a way that will uncover hidden opportunities and allow you to align with a natural rhythm that most people overlook (and in turn, end up fighting against).
In this post, I’ll explain how Mercury Retrograde works, how it impacts your business and—most importantly—how to use it as a strategic advantage. Then if you want more, I’ll introduce you to a resource designed to help you thrive during these cycles. If you want to skip right ahead to see what that is, click here.
What is Mercury Retrograde?
Ok, first things first. Here are the basics that you could find with a quick google search, just to set the stage for where we’re going next:
Mercury retrograde happens 3-4 times per year, lasting about three weeks each time (plus what are called “shadow periods” before and after, but more on that later).
From our perspective on Earth, Mercury appears to move backward in its orbit—a phenomenon that symbolizes the shift of energy. Think of it as if you’re on a train and a faster train goes by. When you watch it out the window, it gives the sensation that you are moving backwards. Even though you’re not actually moving backwards, you still feel the sensation. Planetary retrogrades are kind of like that.
Mercury governs communication, technology, travel, and decision-making, so when it’s in retrograde, disruptions in these areas are more common.
Most people experience this period as chaos: emails that get stuck in drafts or sent to spam, contracts that are not actually what you thought they were, or plans that have been in the works for months suddenly derail. But the energy isn’t inherently negative—it’s simply an invitation to slow down, reflect and adjust course.
The secret to thriving during Mercury Retrograde is to embrace these cycles rather than resist them. By understanding how the energy impacts your business, you’ll learn to recognize potential setbacks as opportunities for future growth and alignment.
Why Mercury Retrograde Matters for Business Owners
Business requires strategy, strategy requires the mind, and Mercury rules the mind.
As a business owner, you rely on clear communication, efficient systems and precise timing to achieve your goals. Mercury Retrograde challenges these areas and shines a spotlight on what isn’t working. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but it creates a perfect time to refine, reflect and reconnect.
As a general rule, anything starting with “re” is a great activity for Mercury Retrograde. For example:
Revisit old projects: Mercury Retrograde favors reflection over initiation, so rather spending energy trying to launch something new, dust off old ideas or projects that you put on the back burner and consider adjustments you can make to bring them back to life.
Refine Your Processes: Trust that disruptions are working in your favor to reveal inefficiencies. Pay close attention to where things break down—whether it’s communication, workflows, technology, etc—and take the time to make improvements. You’ll thank yourself later.
Reconsider big decisions: Major launches or long-term commitments are going to require an unexpected change down the road, so it’s best to postpone doing anything big or permanent until after the retrograde clears. Instead, focus on preparation for said launch and double or triple check that everything is in order.
Reflect on your goals: Ask yourself if your current strategies are aligned with your long-term vision, or if you’ve accidentally gone off course by following someone else’s framework or “proven” strategy.
Reconnect with your network: Reach out to past collaborators or clients, retrograde energy is going to help you uncover new opportunities with past connections.
So you see? While other business owners are caught off guard with the challenges of Mercury Retrograde (especially if they don’t know it’s happening), you can use these cycles to your advantage to prepare for the next stage of your growth.
